Teaching Professions (ideally juniors) introduces students to careers in education, focusing on PreK-12 teaching and related fields. Students will learn about the various roles and responsibilities of teachers, credential requirements, teacher shortage areas, working conditions, wages, benefits, and future job prospects.
The program covers the structure of schools, current educational issues, the history of education, teaching practices, and contemporary challenges in the field. It encourages students to think critically about the teaching profession, its demands, and its rewards. Additionally, students will explore the historical, philosophical, developmental, and psychological foundations of American education, applying these principles to teaching and learning practices. Field experiences in PreK-8 settings and the development of a professional portfolio are key components of the program, providing practical insights and preparation for a career in education.
Teaching Professions Internship (seniors only - prerequisite Teaching Professions) offers students the valuable opportunity to gain firsthand experience in local K-8 classrooms under the direct supervision of a host teacher. Through this internship, students will observe instructional methods, classroom management, and various teaching strategies. They will engage in one-on-one work with students, implement classroom lessons, and develop both professional and student portfolios. This hands-on experience allows students to reflect on their aspirations to become teachers and gain a realistic understanding of the classroom environment.
