Eligibility Requirements
Grades: 11-12; minimum 2.5 GPA and 90% attendance record at home high school required; mandatory interview with the instructor prior to enrollment in the class; strong reading, writing, math and study skills recommended.
Credit
3.0 per academic year in Fire Science; 0.5 per academic year in Integrated English*; and 0.5 per academic year in Integrated Math*
*English and math content is integrated within the Fire Science program, and content is specific to advanced communication and calculations skills necessary in this industry.
Articulated Credit
Metropolitan Community College; may be earned for 13 college credit hours.
Upon successful completion of this course the student will have received training for certification as a Firefighter I & II, Hazardous Materials Awareness & Operations and National Incident Management System (NIMS 100, 200, & 700). A class uniform will be required. This course is both physically and intellectually demanding course, and students will participate in active physical training. Successful completion of all required courses allows the student to be eligible for testing as a firefighter through the Missouri Division of Fire Safety. The Missouri Division of Fire Safety and the IFSAC require students to be 17-years-old by October 31st during the firefighter training year to be eligible for state certification examinations.
General Aptitude Test
Students have completed at their home school an appropriate standardized test battery (General Aptitude Test Battery (GATB), Differential Aptitude Test Battery, and Apticom) and a standardized test of reading achievement. Aptitude batteries assess capacities and abilities necessary to competently perform the responsibilities of the Firefighter/EMT such as learning ability, verbal, numerical and spatial ability, form & clerical perception, motor coordination, finger and manual dexterity, eye-hand-foot coordination, color discrimination.
