The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics states, "All students should study mathematics in each of the four years they are enrolled in high school." "Because student's interests and aspirations may change during and after high school, their mathematics education should guarantee access to a broad spectrum of career and educational options. They should experience the interplay of algebra, geometry, statistics, probability, and discrete mathematics." Our goal at CCC is to develop and instill valuable and practical mathematical expertise and couple this information that pertains and is related to the Student's field of study in the Student's curriculum. Our students will receive .25 credits of math per semester for two consecutive years to receive a total of 1 core math credit.

Reasons for Embedded Math

The Government has called for raising graduation requirements for all schools in the country. Missouri has raised our graduation requirements to:

4 language arts
3 math
3 science
3 social
  • Sending school students who attend technical school training at off campus facilities often lose two credits due to traveling back and forth from their school. Our embedded credit programs will allow them to earn as many credits as other students who remain in their regular on-site classrooms. We will have more students graduate on time because they will be able to earn the extra credit.
  • The granting of embedded credit will help all districts meet the MSIP requirement in reference to the dropout rate. Allowing some students to earn additional credits will also help them to remain on track so they will be able to graduate with their class. This will help decrease the number of dropouts and increase graduation rates.
  • Embedded math reinforces math skills needed by industry.
  • Future gradates are lacking in necessary math and reading skills.
  • Graduates, who are our future workforce, must learn how to learn to keep up with ever-changing Industries.
  • Embedded credit is directly linked to employable skills.
  • Embedded credit core classes help students understand the cohesive interaction between academic skill and workplace application.

The extra work to earn the "embedded" credit will add rigor to our vocational programs and will require constructive homework for most of the vocational students.

SMDTC

We are calling our embedded program/process Specialized Mathematics for the Development of Technological Careers "SMDTC" because this acronym abbreviates what we are progressing to accomplish.

Our Endeavors

The Curriculum for our embedded math process this year is being developed by a combined effort of the CCC staff both together and in each program. We are developing, refining, and customizing arithmetical models to accentuate the mathematics that already exists in our current trade specific areas. We are excited and enthusiastic about joining forces to prove that our cooperative synergetic environment will prove to be a standard to "blaze a trail" that other technology training centers will desire to follow in the future. We are defining and labeling our embedded math material, "SMDTC", "Specialized Mathematics for the Development of Technological Careers." Students enrolled in the embedded math program will receive .25 credits of math per semester for two consecutive years to receive a total of 1 full math credit.
